DVD Authoring Examples

recyclingland

The un-authored start screen and Main menu of the DVD giving several options, on this particular DVD

  • "Play" - started playback of the main feature, at the main feature's finish the dvd was programmed to return to this main menu.
  • "Interviews" - takes you to a submenu which provided 8 interviews which could be accessed individually or as a whole concurrent video section (Play all interviews). The scripting of this submenu allowed the concurrent video finish option to return you to the main menu and the individual interview finish option to pre select the next interview on the submenu, (until they had all been viewed in which case the main menu button on this page would be pre selected).
  • "Teachers Notes" - this option takes you to a read only screen where directions on how to accesses the DVD rom content on a windows or Mac operating system were explained in easy to follow, plain English, step by step.
  • "Additional Features" - this again took you to a sub menu, giving you 3 options, 'Play all "- played the main feature, followed by the interviews and then returned you to the main menu. "Repeat Main Feature" - this placed the main feature in a continuous loop (ideal for exhibitions), allowing the dvd player to be left repeating this feature until main menu was press on the remote control which would take you back to the start screen and main menu. The 3 option on this menu was simple return to "Main Menu" option.

scripting

Extensive scripting was used to give the dvd all of the options above, this allowed only one source for each video clip to be used.

  • Though the main feature was available in 3 dvd options it was the same video clip used in each, how the dvd player was told to handle or forward you onto the next section is all that changed.
The reason for complex scripting such as this are clear, it allows you ultimate flexibility, retains quality (in regards to limited space available) and gives far more options to how video content is addressed.
